Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has sacked senior official Baltasar Ebang Engonga after hundreds of explicit videos surfaced, showing him in intimate encounters with various women, including wives of high-ranking officials.

Some of the footage, allegedly filmed in his finance ministry office, went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage.

Ebang Engonga, head of the National Financial Investigation Agency and a relative of President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, was removed from his role via presidential decree.

This scandal unfolded while he was being held at Black Beach prison in Malabo, facing separate accusations of misappropriating public funds.

Despite efforts by Equatorial Guinea’s telecommunications authorities to limit access to the videos, they quickly spread globally, inspiring parodies and music tributes. The incident even sparked parliamentary discussions in Kenya, highlighting the challenges of controlling digital information.

One of the women involved, speaking anonymously on national television, expressed distress, stating she had consented to the recording under the assumption it would be erased immediately. She questioned why the video was retained and shared.

Chief Prosecutor Anatolio Nzang Nguema hinted that additional charges may be filed, including potential public health violations if tests confirm transmission risks of sexually transmitted infections.

This incident marks a significant turning point for Equatorial Guinea, which has been under President Obiang’s strict governance since 1979. The scandal has drawn international attention, placing scrutiny on the nation’s political elite.
