A senior lawyer in Akure, Ondo State, has reportedly shut down his law practice to relocate to the United Kingdom, where he now works as a cleaner.
This revelation, shared by a fellow lawyer identified on X (formerly Twitter) as @Bolanlecole, highlights the growing trend of professionals leaving Nigeria in search of better opportunities abroad.
According to the report, the lawyer was influenced by his wife to pursue a new life overseas. He closed his chamber and moved to the UK via the study route. However, upon arrival, he took up a job as a cleaner at a retail chain, Primark, to make ends meet.
The tweet read:
“A very senior lawyer closed down his chamber here in Akure and relocated to the UK through the influence of his wife. He got to the UK through the study route and is currently working with Primark as a cleaner.”

@Bolanlecole further elaborated on the situation, expressing concern over the state of the country:
“A lot of people don’t understand the point of my tweet. I want people to know how bad the country is at the moment.
People are leaving every day without minding what they will face abroad. Professors, doctors, bankers, politicians, pastors, and nurses are all closing down their businesses in Nigeria to relocate.”
The tweet has sparked discussions on social media about the harsh economic realities in Nigeria, which have forced many skilled professionals to leave stable careers for uncertain futures abroad. It also underscores the urgent need for reforms to address the brain drain and improve opportunities at home.
