Ghana Would Have Been Like Dubai Now If I Were Still President — Mahama Brags

John Dramani Mahama, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed his disappointment over the lack of significant development under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking during a special prayer session led by Muslim clerics and imams in the Ashanti Region on Monday, December 2, Mahama pointed out that the current government has borrowed approximately $11.5 billion within five years but has failed to achieve the level of development expected with such financial resources.

Mahama contrasted this with his administration, which he said utilized $3.5 billion in loans during his four years in office to implement transformative projects, including new harbors, airports, and other critical infrastructure.

“Within five years, [President Akufo-Addo] took a loan of $11.5 billion. I was in power for four years, and all the things we did, new harbors, an airport, and many other projects, were from a $3.5 billion loan,” Mahama explained.

The former President further emphasized his belief that, with the same resources available to President Akufo-Addo, his administration could have transformed Ghana into a nation comparable to Dubai. “Ghana would have been like Dubai under me if I got the kind of money Akufo-Addo had,” he stated.

Mahama’s comments come as the country prepares for the December 7 general elections. The NDC candidate’s criticism of the Akufo-Addo administration’s handling of the economy is likely to be a key issue in the upcoming elections.

This is not the first time Mahama has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration’s development record. Previously, he had criticized the President’s comments on the lack of development in Ekumfi, where the President revealed that he intentionally ignored the demands of Ekumfi residents due to their voting pattern.
