Akwesi, a final-year university student set to graduate in September, recently lost ¢20,000 to scammers posing as Canadian immigration officials.
The scam was orchestrated through a dubious website, canadaimmigrationexpress.com, which lacks SSL security, a key indicator that it should not be trusted with personal information.
Akwesi received a call claiming that his Express Entry application had been approved and that he needed to pay a small fee of $5 to finalize the process.
Upon submitting his debit card details for the payment, his account was rapidly debited for a total of ¢20,000 before he could intervene.
This incident highlights a growing trend of online scams, with fraudsters developing new and more sophisticated tactics to deceive unsuspecting individuals.
