In a recent interview with Bola Ray on Accra-based Starr FM, former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo made a controversial statement linking Ghana’s poverty to its citizens’ love of sleep.
He claimed that any nation that prioritizes sleep will struggle with poverty, citing Ghana as a prime example.
Ampofo argued that Ghana’s eight-hour workday and overnight sleep patterns contribute to its economic stagnation.

He contrasted this with countries like America, UK, Germany, China, and India, which he believes “don’t sleep” and have thriving economies.
When questioned about the NDC’s past governance and their inability to address this issue, Ampofo attributed it to societal progress, stating that economies must grow and expand to generate more industries and employment.
He emphasized that Africa’s sleep habit is a major contributor to its poverty, sparking debate about the role of work ethic in economic development.
