The Ghanaian amputee national team, known as the Black Challenge, has revealed that they faced neglect from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the point of having to buy their own jerseys from Kantamanto for the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON).
Last month, the Black Challenge triumphed over Morocco with a 2-1 victory in the tournament final, securing the Amputee AFCON title in Egypt.
Despite their success, the team faced criticism from Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, for accepting donations from outside sources before an official meeting to present the AFCON trophy. This criticism followed a $10,000 donation to the team from former President John Mahama, with the Minister demanding a detailed accounting of all funds received.

Stephen Richard Obeng, the head coach of the Black Challenge, disclosed in an interview with Accra’s Starr FM that the Ministry only covered their airfare and participation fees, failing to provide any additional support from the team’s budget. He admitted that the team was forced to purchase their AFCON jerseys from Kantamanto due to the Ministry’s lack of provision.
