Ghana's Galamsey Crisis Escalates as New Videos Reveal Devastating State of River Pra

Illegal mining, known as Galamsey, has plunged Ghana into a severe water supply crisis. Shocking new videos reveal the deplorable state of the Pra River.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) reports that excessive pollution from Galamsey has led to significant siltation, cutting water production to a mere 7,500 cubic meters daily, just a quarter of its normal capacity.

As a result, areas like Cape Coast and Elmina face acute water shortages, prompting urgent calls for action against illegal mining.

The crisis has triggered environmental devastation, including deforestation, habitat destruction, and widespread water pollution, threatening both community health and livelihoods.

Traditional leaders, like the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, have taken a firm stance by destooling chiefs involved in these activities.

Public outrage is mounting amid growing frustration over the government’s perceived inaction, with demands for sustainable solutions and alternative livelihoods for those driven to Galamsey out of economic necessity.
