In a grand ceremony attended by 21 Heads of State, three Vice Presidents, four Ministers, and 24 envoys, President-elect John Dramani Mahama has taken the oath of office, marking his return to the presidency.
This momentous occasion draws significant attention both domestically and internationally, underscoring the global recognition of Ghana’s political transition.
The inauguration, held at the Independence Square in Accra, featured a wide range of dignitaries from across the world. In his victory speech, Mahama emphasized unity, calling on all Ghanaians to work together towards a brighter future. “This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to the Ghanaian people who have placed their faith in our vision,” he declared.
To ensure a smooth and secure conduct of the inauguration, the Ghana Police Service implemented stringent security protocols across Accra. Roadblocks, traffic restrictions, and diversions were in place to manage the flow of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Designated security perimeters were established around key locations, including the Ako Adjei Interchange, AU Roundabout, and State House.
Security Measures in Place
- Road closures and traffic diversions were enforced from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on January 7, 2025.
- Motorists were diverted via alternative routes to ease congestion and facilitate smooth travel.
- Designated parking areas were provided for attendees, including the Forecourt of the State House and Effua Sutherland Park.
In addition to the presidential swearing-in, the police confirmed arrangements for the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and the Speaker of Parliament, which took place on January 6, 2025, at the Parliament House.
As part of the heightened security measures, the Ministry of National Security issued a ban on all private drones in the vicinity of Black Star Square. This directive applies to both recreational and commercial drones, aiming to safeguard the dignitaries and the public.
With the deployment of robust security and logistical arrangements, Ghana has ensured a smooth transition of power, as President-elect John Dramani Mahama takes office alongside Vice President-elect Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
