President Nana Akufo-Addo has made it clear that his administration is focused on stopping illegal mining, not galamsey altogether.
“I never said I was coming to stop galamsey. Galamsey has been there since ages, I said I was coming to stop illegal mining. I’m against illegal mining,” he emphasized.
This distinction is crucial, as galamsey, a traditional small-scale mining practice, has been a part of Ghanaian culture for generations. However, illegal mining has devastating environmental consequences, including deforestation and water pollution.
To address this issue, President Akufo-Addo has established an initiative to curb the menace through the lands and mineral commission.
The president’s clarification comes amid growing tensions and protests from small-scale miners who fear losing their livelihoods.
