Ghanaian rapper Pope Skinny has embarked on a new journey, leaving the music industry behind to become a truck driver in the United States.
In a candid interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Pope Skinny shared his struggles as a musician and why he made the unexpected career shift.
“The music industry doesn’t provide security,” Pope Skinny lamented. “No SSNIT, no pension. That’s why many creatives struggle financially, especially in old age.” He emphasized the importance of planning for the future, advising aspiring artists to consider alternatives.
“In the West, the system is more reliable. They have social security schemes that take care of you until you die. If you’re not producing hit songs, you’ll go hungry,” Pope Skinny said.

The rapper also criticized the Food and Drugs Authority’s ban on celebrity endorsements for alcohol, advocating for more opportunities for creatives.
Now, Pope Skinny navigates American roads, driving a big truck – a feat he believes would be impossible in Ghana, where he’d face ridicule.
