Kenya: Governor Sakaja Pelted with Stones at Fire-Ravaged Toi Market Amid Rising Tensions in Nairobi

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja faced a hostile reception on Saturday when he visited Toi Market in Kibra, Kenya, the site of a devastating fire that claimed four lives.

The governor’s attempt to assess the damage and offer support to the affected traders was met with anger, as some individuals in the crowd began pelting him with stones.

A viral video captures the chaotic scene, showing Sakaja’s entourage scrambling to shield him from the projectiles as they hastily retreated from the razed structures and scorched ground.

This incident is the latest in a series of upheavals that have rocked Nairobi and Kenya at large in recent months.

The tension reached a boiling point on June 25, 2024, when thousands of protesters stormed the Kenyan Parliament Building in response to the passing of the controversial Kenya Finance Bill 2024.

The demonstration, part of wider protests against proposed tax increases, escalated dramatically when protesters set fire to a section of the building.
