In a surprise move, President John Mahama has revoked the appointments of Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, effective immediately.
This decision was made in accordance with the powers vested in the President under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
The revocation of appointments affects two main groups:
- Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies: Their appointments have been revoked, and they are expected to hand over their duties to their respective Coordinating Directors.
- Assembly Members: Those appointed pursuant to the relevant sections of the Act have also had their appointments revoked.
In the interim, the Coordinating Directors of the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAS) will assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.
This move is not unprecedented, as former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also made changes to the leadership of various municipal and district assemblies in 2024.
However, the scope and timing of President Mahama’s decision have raised eyebrows, sparking speculation about the motivations behind the revocations.
