Ghanaians React as President Akufo-Addo Unveils Controversial Statue Amid Unfinished Regional Projects

President Nana Akufo-Addo recently unveiled a statue of himself at the entrance of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi during his “thank you” tour of the Western Region, stirring mixed public reactions.

The statue, intended to honor his contributions to the region’s development, comes as several major projects, including the rehabilitation of the hospital, remain incomplete. Social media platforms were quick to react, with “Nebuchadnezzar” trending as many questioned the decision to unveil the statue amid ongoing infrastructural challenges.

Critics, including MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, voiced concerns over the choice to prioritize self-honoring gestures while essential developments lag.

Supporters of Akufo-Addo, however, view the statue as recognition of his achievements, particularly in education and infrastructure.

Akufo-Addo defended the statue, pointing to his administration’s accomplishments and advocating for continuity under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The event has sparked discussions on leadership and legacy in Ghana, with citizens divided over the statue’s symbolism versus the reality of incomplete regional projects.
