Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is facing backlash from the Association of Liberal Muslims and the Coalition of Concerned Muslims of Ghana.
The groups are demanding that NAPO, as he is popularly known, reveal the names of the mallams/Imams he alleged were involved in teaching Comprehensive Sexuality Education to basic school students on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) [1).
The Muslim groups have given NAPO a three-day ultimatum to retract his statement and apologize to the Muslim community nationwide. The controversy surrounding NAPO’s claims has sparked widespread debate, with many calling for clarification and accountability.
As a former Minister of Education and current Minister of Energy, NAPO’s statements carry significant weight. His response to the demands will likely have implications for his political career and the NPP’s relationships with Muslim communities in Ghana.
NAPO has been a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, serving as Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency since 2009 and holding various cabinet positions. His current role as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 presidential election makes his response to these demands even more critical.
