The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has declared a nationwide strike, effective Wednesday, July 3, 2024, due to the government’s failure to pay their allowances for five months.
The frustrated personnel, who are owed three to five months of allowances, have continued to work without pay despite the risk of sanctions for not reporting to their posts for three consecutive months.
The association is appealing to the public, private stakeholders, and media outlets to support their cause and advocate for the prompt payment of their allowances.
This development comes after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced plans to make national service voluntary, a move that has raised concerns among former directors of the scheme, who argue that it reflects a lack of understanding of the significance of national service for individuals and the country.
The strike action is likely to affect various sectors, including education, healthcare, and government institutions, where national service personnel are deployed.
