Next NPP Gov’t Will Not Ban Galamsey But We Will Do It Responsibly — NAPO Assures Ghanaians

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh aka NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential candidate, has reassured small-scale miners that an NPP government will not ban their operations.

Instead, the party vows to empower them to adopt responsible mining practices and expand their businesses.

Speaking in the Manso Adubia constituency of the Ashanti Region, NAPO emphasized the need to distinguish between regulated mining and illegal activities that harm the environment and communities. The NPP’s approach prioritizes sustainable practices in the small-scale mining sector.

NAPO referenced Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promises to support responsible mining initiatives benefiting local communities and the economy.

This commitment comes as Organised Labour prepares to strike on October 10, 2024, due to frustrations over the government’s handling of the illegal mining crisis, known as “galamsey”.

Organised Labour demands stronger action against illegal mining while supporting the formalization of small-scale mining. They advocate for a balanced approach to protect the environment and ensure legitimate miners operate without fear of harassment or shutdowns.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated, “A government led by Dr. Bawumia will promote mining responsibly, without destroying water bodies and forests.” He also promised to make equipment for responsible mining available to Ghanaians.
