Nigerian Yomi Olayeye Arrested for $10M US Unemployment Scam

Yomi Olayeye, a 40-year-old Nigerian man also known as ‘Sabbie,’ was arrested on August 13, 2024, at JFK International Airport in New York City for his alleged role in a $10 million COVID-19 unemployment scam.

Olayeye faces charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, and identity theft, with authorities accusing him of masterminding a scheme that exploited unemployment benefits intended for those financially affected by the pandemic.

The fraud spanned multiple states in the U.S., with Olayeye and his accomplices allegedly using stolen identities to file false claims.

This crime has drawn significant attention due to its international implications and the substantial amount of money involved.
