A massive fire engulfed the Aboabo Market in Tamale last night, leaving traders devastated as their goods were reduced to ashes.
The inferno, which started late at night, rapidly consumed several stalls before firefighters could contain it. A firefighter from the Northern Regional Command revealed that efforts to battle the blaze were hindered by a lack of water, as the Ghana Water Company had shut off their hydrant.
Despite deploying four fire tenders to the scene, the lack of water rendered their efforts largely ineffective, intensifying the destruction.
The fire has reignited conversations about the need for better emergency preparedness and improved coordination between the Ghana National Fire Service and water utility providers.
Traders affected by the disaster have called on authorities for urgent support, as many have lost their livelihoods overnight.
The incident underscores the critical need for sustainable firefighting resources and infrastructure to prevent such tragedies in the future.
