An Achimota Magistrate Court convicted the 16 New Patriotic Party (NPP) members guilty and sentenced them to jail time for breaking into UTV’s premises and interfering with their evening programming.

The court orders that GH $2400 be paid by each side. Rioting and planning to commit crimes were among the accusations levelled against the prisoners. They accepted responsibility for the charges.

The UTV studios were invaded by them on October 7, 2023, as United Showbiz was being broadcast live at the moment.

They said the show had become a forum where the government had been unfairly criticised in an unprofessional manner frequently.

They asserted yet again that A Plus, a political activist and panellist on a regular show, tore up a letter from the NPP to UTV.

They were then taken into custody by the police and charged accordingly.

When the invasion took place, both the Ghana Journalists Association and the National Media Commission condemned it.

According to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the act was “barbaric and mediaeval, and it is very much compatible with the building blocks in recent years to develop a state of impunity against the media, one that is worse than the famed “culture of impunity.”

According to them, the programme had evolved into a venue where the government had repeatedly been harshly and unprofessionally condemned.

They claimed once more that A Plus, a political activist and regular show panellist, tore apart a letter from the NPP to UTV management urging them to reform the programme on live. Later, they were detained by the police and charged appropriately.

The National Media Commission and the Ghana Journalists Association both denounced the invasion when it occurred.

The act was “barbaric and mediaeval, and it is very much consistent with the building blocks in recent times to establish a state of impunity against the media, one that is worse than the infamous “culture of silence,” ” the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) said.
