NPP Wishes To Ban Galamsey But We Are Afraid It Will Affect Our ‘Breaking The 8’ Mission — MP For Asante Akim South

Kwaku Asante-Boateng, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, has shed light on the government’s reluctance to tackle galamsey, Ghana’s pervasive illegal mining issue.

According to Hon Asante-Boateng, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) fears of losing the upcoming December 7 elections are hindering decisive action.

In an interview on October 2, the NPP MP revealed that the party’s strong opposition to galamsey in 2020 led to lost parliamentary seats in mining communities. This experience, he suggested, has instilled caution in the government.

“The fear of losing power is delaying the ban,” Asante-Boateng admitted. “Any party could face the same dilemma.” He emphasized that this concern is inherent in politics, particularly in regions where galamsey is widespread.

Asante-Boateng questioned whether the government would risk losing electoral support by imposing a ban. “We lost parliamentary seats in mining communities in 2020. Will the current government risk losing power by imposing a ban?”
