Renowned Ghanaian journalist Captain Smart has leveled serious allegations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding their stance on illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Speaking on his Onua Maakye show, Captain Smart claimed that the NPP’s public fight against galamsey is merely a façade meant to deceive the public.
He alleged that while the party outwardly condemns galamsey, it has secretly instructed its allies to withdraw from their sites, creating a false image of a crackdown.
He further asserted that the NPP’s real intentions are outlined in the Agyapadie book, which allegedly details the party’s plan to issue 319 small-scale mining licenses exclusively to their loyal supporters. He accused President Akuffo-Addo of overseeing this initiative, with the Ministry of Minerals and Lands Commission playing a key role in distributing the licenses.
In a further claim, Captain Smart accused the government of planning to stage-manage the arrests of individuals, presenting them as galamsey operators to give the appearance of progress in the crackdown. He suggested that this staged operation would commence on Monday.
Ghana’s struggle against galamsey has long posed challenges, leading to environmental harm, violence, and lost revenue. Although the NPP has committed to tackling the issue, critics have often described their actions as inconsistent and ineffective.
