Contrary to earlier reports suggesting a mass deportation of 6,200 Ghanaians from the United States, Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that only 156 Ghanaians are currently facing imminent deportation.
Ablakwa made this clarification during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, citing official information from U.S. authorities.
The Minister-Designate assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with U.S. authorities to safeguard the rights and dignity of affected Ghanaians.
This development comes amidst a crackdown on unauthorized immigration by the Trump administration, which has arrested over 3,500 individuals across the U.S. since the President’s inauguration on January 20.
Deportation flights have also begun, utilizing U.S. military aircraft to transport migrants to their countries of origin or third nations.

According to estimates by the Pew Research Center, approximately 11 million unauthorized immigrants reside in the U.S., which has a total population of 341 million.
Historically, Ghana has had its share of deportation challenges. In 2019, the U.S. imposed visa restrictions on Ghana due to the country’s alleged lack of cooperation in accepting its nationals ordered removed from the U.S.
However, the Ghanaian government disputed these claims, stating that it had always cooperated with U.S. authorities in the processing and removal of Ghanaian citizens.
