Residents of Dutse, Jigawa State, in Nigeria were thrown into chaos on Thursday evening when a fuel tanker exploded at a fuelling station, sending people running for their lives.
The incident occurred at about 8pm at Shakkotu along Kiyawa Road, Dutse.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion happened while the fuel tanker was offloading fuel at the station.
“I was nearby when I heard a loud explosion,” said Baba Nura, an eyewitness. “I rushed to the scene and saw that the fuel tanker had burst and the fire surrounded almost everywhere in the filling station.”
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that they received a report of the fire outbreak at about 8pm.

“We immediately rushed to the scene with the fire service men,” said SP Shi’isu Adam, spokesperson for the Command. “For now, there is no report of deaths, but our men are at the moment at the scene of the incident and details would be released later.”
The area was cordoned and barricaded immediately after the incident, and fire service men were deployed to bring the situation under control.
This incident comes on the heels of a similar fuel tanker explosion in Suleja, Niger State, earlier this month, which resulted in the loss of at least 98 lives.
