Tensions escalated into heavy gunfire at the Missiga Immigration Service checkpoint in Bawku on October 9, 2024, following a dispute between personnel from the Ghana Police Service and Customs.
According to reliable security sources, the confrontation began when police officers blocked their Customs counterparts from inspecting the contents of a truck heading toward Togo.
Customs officers suspected the truck was transporting smuggled cocoa beans and insisted on conducting a search, but the police refused.
The standoff quickly spiraled into an exchange of gunfire between the two security agencies, causing panic in the area. Fortunately, soldiers were called in to de-escalate the situation, successfully bringing the clash under control.
The incident has raised concerns over coordination and cooperation between state security forces, especially at sensitive border points like Bawku.
Authorities are expected to investigate the altercation and address any underlying issues to prevent future confrontations.
