In a bid to address the longstanding inefficiencies in Ghana’s power distribution system, President John Dramani Mahama has suggested the possibility of privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
This move, according to the President, would involve the private sector in managing ECG to resolve operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery.
Speaking during a meeting with a World Bank delegation on January 8, 2025, Mahama emphasized that privatization could be part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the energy sector’s performance.
He reflected on Ghana’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his tenure as Vice President, highlighting the importance of efficient energy distribution in achieving the nation’s development goals.

The President assured stakeholders that any decisions regarding ECG’s future would involve thorough consultations to balance public interest with the need for improved performance.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain,” Mahama stated, emphasizing the need for private sector efficiency in electricity distribution.
This development comes after years of calls for ECG’s privatization, with think tanks like IMANI Centre for Policy and Education advocating for at least 80% privatization to bring about competition and efficient service.
Mahama’s latest comments mark a shift from his earlier stance, where he declared that the government had no intention of privatizing ECG.
