The Black Stars had a chance to become the first African team to move past the World Cup quarterfinals, but they lost to Uruguay in 2010 on penalties.
In the final seconds of extra time, Suarez used his hand to stop Dominic Adiyiah’s goal-bound header, giving Ghana a penalty and further aggravating the situation.
Ghana was awarded a penalty after Suarez was sent off for acting in an unsportsmanlike manner, but Asamoah Gyan was unable to convert.
However, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez has acknowledged that he joyfully yelled “Goal!” when Asamoah Gyan missed his crucial penalty during the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal game.
The seasoned striker claimed he was very happy after Gyan missed, and he became ecstatic right away because it looked like Uruguay had scored.
Background
Uruguay defeated Ghana 4-2 on penalties to win the match and advance to the World Cup semifinal.
Since that game in South Africa 12 years ago, Suarez has been vilified by Ghanaians and other Africans for his actions.
