Member of Parliament for the Sekondi constituency in the Western Region, Blay Nyamekye Armah, has announced plans to relocate the statue of President Akufo-Addo erected in his constituency to the former president’s hometown in the Eastern Region.
Speaking during a press engagement, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, who is serving his first term in Parliament, revealed that he would send a petition to President Akufo-Addo seeking permission to relocate the statue to Kyebi.
Blay Nyamekye’s decision stems from his conviction that the statue is not needed in his constituency and was merely a “vanity project” by the former leader.
This sentiment echoes the widespread criticism that greeted the statue’s unveiling before the election.
The statue, erected at the entrance of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, was intended as a thank-you to Akufo-Addo for his development projects in the region.
However, Ghanaians overwhelmingly rejected the statue, labeling it undeserved and a symbol of the government’s disconnect from the people.
