Tarkwa Water Plant Shuts Down Amid Galamsey-Induced Pollution Crisis

The Bonsa Headworks water treatment plant in Tarkwa, managed by Ghana Water Limited, has been indefinitely closed due to severe pollution caused by illegal mining activities, locally known as Galamsey.

This closure has disrupted potable water supply to 75% of residents in the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality, leaving thousands without access to clean drinking water. The polluted state of the Bonsa River, the plant’s primary source, has rendered it impossible to treat water to acceptable standards.

Residents are now forced to rely on alternative sources, such as sachet water or untreated surface water, sparking health and sanitation concerns.

Ghana Water Limited has expressed frustration over repeated environmental violations, calling on the government to intensify efforts to curb illegal mining.

Local leaders and environmental advocates have also urged swift action to restore the river and protect other vital water sources.

This crisis serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked galamsey activities on Ghana’s natural resources and public health.

A long-term solution will require stronger enforcement of environmental laws and collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard the nation’s water bodies.
