Okponglo became the center of attention yesterday as the demonstration by the group “Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey” kicked off, attracting hundreds of protesters.
The group, made up of citizens advocating for an end to illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” took to the streets to demand immediate action from the government to stop the environmental destruction caused by the practice.
Protesters marched through key streets, holding placards with messages such as “Save Our Water Bodies,” “Stop Galamsey Now,” and “Our Future Is at Risk.”
The crowd, made up of activists, students, and local residents, chanted slogans and called for stronger measures to be taken against illegal miners, who are believed to be causing extensive harm to the nation’s forests, water bodies, and agricultural lands.

The demonstration, which began peacefully, was heavily monitored by security forces to ensure order. Leaders of the “Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey” addressed the crowd, emphasizing the devastating effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment, particularly on water resources and farmlands.
They also criticized the government’s efforts as insufficient and urged for stricter enforcement of laws and policies.
“We are here to make sure the government listens to our plea. Galamsey is killing our communities, and we cannot sit back and watch. We need action now,” one protest leader said during the rally.
As the demonstration unfolded, traffic was momentarily disrupted, with some roads around Okponglo being cordoned off by police to ensure the safety of both protesters and motorists.
The protest reflects the growing concern among Ghanaians over the unchecked rise of illegal mining and its impact on the country’s environment.
