The Kumasi Airport Mahama Has Been Bragging About Looks Like A Kitchen — Chairman Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has sharply criticized former President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as the substandard state of the Kumasi Airport during Mahama’s administration.

Speaking in an interview with Serwaa Amihere on GHOne TV, Chairman Wontumi did not mince words about his dissatisfaction with the facility under Mahama’s leadership.

“When Mahama was in power, he promised to build an airport for the Ashanti Region, but what he delivered was far from acceptable. The airport back then was like a kitchen—a place for cooking, not an international gateway,” Wontumi stated in Twi, comparing the old facility to the newly upgraded one under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government.

The Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, inaugurated on May 10, 2024, has undergone a significant transformation.

The revamped facility now features modernized infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment, meeting international standards. Enhancements include sleek operational areas, advanced equipment installations, and a contemporary architectural design with glass-paneled staircases.

Visitors to the airport are welcomed with the phrase “Nante Yie,” meaning “Safe Journey,” symbolizing the facility’s commitment to comfort and hospitality.

The newly upgraded airport is expected to bolster the Ashanti Region’s global reputation, boost economic growth, and create new business opportunities by improving connectivity within Ghana and beyond.

Chairman Wontumi lauded the Akufo-Addo government for delivering on its promise, asserting that the project is a testament to the NPP’s dedication to transforming the region and elevating its infrastructure to world-class standards.
