Votes For Akua Donkor Will Be Counted As Rejected Ballot – EC Warns Delegates

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that any votes cast for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) in the upcoming elections will be treated as rejected ballots.

This decision follows the demise of the party’s founder and presidential candidate, Madam Akua Donkor.

According to the EC, the GFP was given an opportunity to replace its deceased candidate, but the process to field a replacement was unsuccessful. Madam Donkor’s running mate had filed nomination forms to contest in her stead, but his candidature was disqualified by the commission on procedural grounds.

Despite these developments, the EC confirmed that the GFP’s position on the ballot paper would remain unchanged. However, any votes cast in favor of the party will not be added to the total valid votes.

In a statement, the EC explained, “In adherence to electoral regulations, the positions of political parties on the ballot paper are finalized prior to printing.

While we allowed room for the Ghana Freedom Party to present a replacement candidate, the failure to meet the required criteria means that votes cast for the party cannot be counted as valid.”
