The Volta River Authority (VRA) has notified over 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and local assemblies, of its intention to engage in precautionary measures regarding a potential controlled spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam.
According to a notice signed by VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive, Ing. Ken Arthur, the engagement aims to discuss the implications, mitigative measures, and information dissemination to ensure the structural integrity of the dam and the safety of surrounding communities.
This move comes after the devastating flooding that occurred in 2023, which affected over 88,000 people, damaged 5,000 homes, and prompted a GH¢220 million compensation package from the government.
The VRA’s proactive approach seeks to mitigate potential risks and ensure the well-being of those living in the dam’s catchment areas.
Stakeholders are urged to collaborate with the VRA to minimize the impact of any potential spillage.
The authority’s preparedness and engagement efforts demonstrate a commitment to prioritizing safety and community well-being.
