Warn Against Consumption Of Momoni

A recent warning issued by Ghanaian nutritionist Forzia Baidoo has advised Ghanaians against consuming fermented fish, commonly known as Momoni in the Akan language.

The Meridian Medical Center dietician has cautioned that these salted and sun-dried seafood items could have adverse effects on the kidneys and lack any nutritional value.

In a statement reported by Graphic Online, Baidoo warned that eating momoni, kako, and koobi, all high in salt, is associated with kidney diseases. These fish add flavour to food but do not provide any nutritional benefits. In an interview on the GTV Breakfast Show, Baidoo further explained, “They are dangerous flavours and cause a lot of harm to the kidney.”

Kidneys are vital organs that filter debris from the body, eliminate extra water and maintain electrolyte balance. It is essential to take good care of them to prevent serious health issues such as kidney disease. Baidoo advises Ghanaians to consume momoni and similar foods in minimal amounts and to avoid them altogether if they have kidney problems.

Despite being known for its delicious and distinct flavor, fermented fish or momoni has no nutritional advantages, according to Baidoo. The Oxford Reference Dictionary describes momoni as seafood that has been salted for one to two days, sun-dried, and fermented in tropical heat for six to ten hours.

Ms Baidoo’s warning comes as the World Health Organization identifies kidney disease as the 10th leading cause of death worldwide. The organisation emphasises the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, particularly for people with a higher risk of developing kidney disease, such as those with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of the disease.

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension in Ghana continues to rise, and the country needs to take more proactive measures to promote healthy eating habits to prevent these conditions. Experts recommend reducing the intake of processed and high-sodium foods like momoni to maintain good health.

In conclusion, Baidoo’s warning highlights the importance of making informed choices about food consumption and the need for a healthy and balanced diet.

With kidney disease being a significant health concern in Ghana and globally, taking steps to prevent it by reducing the consumption of foods such as momoni is crucial.
