Black Stars coach Otto Addo is appealing to Ghanaians to throw their unwavering support behind the national team as they shift focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
This plea comes in the wake of Ghana’s disappointing exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after a 1-1 draw with Angola last Friday. The result dashed the hopes of the Black Stars making it to the continental showpiece, leaving fans disheartened.
Addressing the press on Sunday, Otto Addo acknowledged the frustration of Ghanaians but urged them to look ahead to the next challenge. “I understand that people are disappointed, maybe angry. I was also disappointed,” he admitted. “But surely we have to move on now.”
The coach emphasized the importance of national support in their bid to secure a place at the World Cup. “We need to do our best to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers, and it starts tomorrow,” he said. “If you [Ghanaians] want us to go to the World Cup, you need to support us.”
Ghana currently sits second in Group I of the World Cup qualifiers, tied on points with group leaders Comoros. With only the top team guaranteed a spot in the knockout phase, the race to qualify remains fiercely competitive.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Chad and Madagascar in crucial matches in March 2025. Otto Addo, who led the team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is determined to make history by becoming the first Ghanaian coach to guide the team to consecutive World Cup appearances.
Despite recent setbacks, Otto Addo remains optimistic about the team’s potential and is calling on Ghanaians to rally behind the Black Stars as they aim to restore national pride on the global stage.
