National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama has fired back at President Nana Akufo-Addo, suggesting the president might be “sleeping” or absent from the country, amidst the ongoing debate over the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
Mahama’s remarks, made during his tour of the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, October 17, were in response to Akufo-Addo’s challenge for him to clarify his stance on the policy. The president had questioned Mahama’s commitment to the program, citing inconsistent statements.
Mahama retorted, “When you stop sleeping, you’ll hear clearly my position on Free SHS.” He emphasized that his position had been clearly articulated, but Akufo-Addo may not have been paying attention.
The NDC presidential candidate highlighted implementation problems with the Free SHS policy, including the lack of dedicated funding, parental dissatisfaction with the double-track system, and poor food quality. Mahama assured that the NDC would address these issues upon taking power.

This exchange escalates the political rivalry between Mahama and Akufo-Addo as the December election approaches, with the Free SHS debate remaining a contentious issue. Mahama’s comments imply that Akufo-Addo is disconnected from his public statements.
The president’s initial challenge stemmed from Mahama’s claim that his administration initiated the Free SHS policy in 2015, despite previous opposition ². The debate surrounding the policy’s ownership and implementation has become a central issue in the ongoing political discourse.
