‘You Won An Election, Not A Coup’ – Bawumia Calls On Mahama To Control Supporters Amid Post-Election Violence

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the recent wave of violence and lawlessness exhibited by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the 2024 election results.

In a statement issued on December 9, Dr. Bawumia urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action to restore peace and unity in the country.

Dr. Bawumia accused some NDC supporters of storming collation centers, vandalizing state properties, and intimidating New Patriotic Party (NPP) members and sympathizers.

He emphasized that these actions pose a significant threat to Ghana’s democratic values and stressed that the national interest must come first.

In response to Dr. Bawumia’s concerns, President-elect John Mahama addressed his supporters during his victory speech on December 10, cautioning them against engaging in acts of vandalism. He encouraged them to channel their energy into rebuilding the nation.

It’s worth noting that electoral violence has been a persistent issue in Ghana, with reports indicating a spike in cases during the 2024 elections.

Research has identified unemployment, poverty, and lack of trust in state institutions as key drivers of electoral violence ². To address this issue, it’s essential for stakeholders to work together to promote peace and stability in the country.
