After Homophobic Assaults, Gay Man Justice Assan Reportedly Receives Asylum In Canada (Details)

A 40-year-old gay man from Ghana named Justice Assan nicknamed Sweet DD may be the happiest person alive as, after being the target of four homophobic murder attempts, he has apparently been given consideration for asylum in Canada.

Justice Assan was allegedly caught trying to have sex with another guy in the environs of the military camp when he was nearly lynched a month ago in Michel Camp, a neighbourhood established around a military installation in Tema in the Greater Accra Region.

Assan was fortunate to escape without dying, and as a result, he is apparently being given consideration as an asylum seeker for Canada.

According to reports, Assan had been nearly beaten by enraged people four times before the attempt on his life.

With a vast majority of the population being religious, Ghana is known for its fierce anti-gay sentiment. All three of Ghana’s major religions—Christianity, Islam, and African traditional religion—condemn LGBT people’s behaviour.

Following a push by some lawmakers, led by Ningo Prampram MP Sam George, to adopt new laws titled the “Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values” bill, anti-gay attitudes have also become more prominent in recent years.

The discussion surrounding the new bill has fanned anti-gay sentiments, which has resulted in a recent surge in attacks on LGBT Ghanaians. The new bill offers far harsher punishments for homos*xuality than previously existed.

Assana apparently requested asylum in Canada and was successful in getting it in the face of countless assaults and never-ending threats from Christians and Muslims alike.

Like Bobrisky in Nigeria, the loudmouth had earlier boasted that he would make a career out of being gay in Ghana; nevertheless, the attacks had reportedly reached a critical point, forcing him to leave the nation.

Currently, Sweet DD seems to have gained freedom from the Ghanaian people, and it is unknown if he will ever return to the nation where his critics will undoubtedly be ready to “teach him a lesson.”
