The cases of Coronavirus in Africa have been observed to be surprisingly low presenting for debate whether or not Africans are invincible to the virus.
Egypt is the only country in Africa that has been hit the hardest already recording 59 cases. This led to black people on the internet to believe that they are immune to the coronavirus. According to them, they are thankful for the melanin on their skin for “being resistant” to the virus.
This assertion can be traced back to February 2020 when a black man from Cameroon contracted the virus while living in the Chinese city of Jingzhou. Kem Senou Pavel Daryl, 21, became the first African person known to be infected with the deadly coronavirus, and the first to recover from it.
He was treated with antibiotics and drugs normally used to treat HIV patients and was put in isolation for 13 days in a local Chinese hospital.
While this story should have been as simple as explained, it has turned a source of fake news. Some publications reported that the reason the Cameroonian got cured is that he is ‘dressed’ in black skin. They also reported that black skin has stronger antibodies than white skin.
The assertion has however been disapproved by professors of medicine and scholars who based their arguments on different hypothesis results.
Not going far, a Chelsea player by the name Hudson Odoi contracted the virus and by the time of this publication, the player had not been confirmed cured even with being a black.
This would not last before Kenya would confirm its first case of coronavirus. During his address, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe rubbished the notion being created calling on every individual to practice caution as the global pandemic continues to take a toll.
“There has been a myth that black people are immune to this virus. I would like to disabuse this notion. The patient is a black Kenyan woman. 27 years of age,” CS Kagwe said.
No study or test has confirmed that being a black guarantees one the immunity against coronavirus. Be wise and observe caution!
