Dead Body Found Breathing at Funeral

A startling incident has come to light in Waverly, Nebraska, where a 74-year-old woman, Constance Glantz, was discovered breathing at a funeral home just two hours after being pronounced dead at a nearby nursing home.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the matter, but no criminal intent has been found thus far.

Glantz was declared dead by nursing home staff and transported to the funeral home, where staff discovered she was still alive and performed CPR. She was then rushed to a local hospital for further care.

The current state of her health is unknown, but her family has been informed, and the funeral home staff handled the situation with care.

This rare case highlights the importance of thorough examination in declaring death. Dr. Stephen Hughes, a senior lecturer in medicine, notes that “death is a process” and that careful examination is necessary to confirm death.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including a case in Ecuador where a 76-year-old woman was declared dead and later found to be alive in her coffin, and a case in South Africa where a woman was found alive in a mortuary fridge after being declared dead following a road accident.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in medical care and the importance of careful declaration of death to avoid such rare but disturbing cases.
