Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar has urged media outlets to exercise extreme caution and verify information thoroughly before publication to avoid national embarrassment and potential chaos.
Her warning comes after a recent incident where a Ghanaian chef, Ebenezer Smith, falsely claimed recognition by Guinness World Records for a cook-a-thon, which was widely reported by major media houses without verification.
Abubakar emphasized the severity of the issue, stating that such misinformation could lead to serious conflicts or nationwide chaos, particularly in the political sphere, especially around election-related topics.

She stressed that the media has the responsibility to verify every piece of information before publication, warning that spreading falsehoods could have dangerous consequences.
The minister’s call comes as many demand an apology from the media for the blunder. The incident has raised concerns about the media’s responsibility to verify information before publication, with many calling for greater diligence to prevent similar incidents in the future.
