Power Thieves Beware: ECG Disconnects 2,000 Houses In Koiman-New Site (See Details)

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has recently disconnected over 2,000 houses from the national grid over illegal connections.

The operation was conducted by the Accra East Region of the ECG on Friday in the Koiman New site in the Ayi Mensa Koiman Electoral Area.

During the exercise, it was discovered that almost all the houses in the area had been connected to illegal meters.

Out of the 2,000 houses, only three were having approved ECG meters. According to the ECG’s Accra East Regional Commercial Manager, Jonathan Asante, there are over 20,000 such meters in their area alone.

The fake meters found are described as mere boxes and, if one unit is sold for one Ghana cedi, the ECG is losing over two million Ghana cedis in Accra East alone.

To prevent illegal reconnection by the residents, ECG officials decided to remove all the electricity cables in the community, leaving the residents in total darkness. However, the Assembly member for the Ayi Mensa Koiman Electoral District, Peter Geh, was mentioned by some locals when questioned.

Although he acknowledged assisting residents in obtaining the alleged fake meters, he claimed to have little knowledge of how to identify a fake meter. He attributed the situation to his people’s inability to obtain a meter.

The Communications Officer for ECG, Accra East Region, Mary Eshun, insisted that the process to get a meter is clear and straightforward. She also explained that delays could be experienced if one comes through a middle man and ‘Goro boys.’

The situation highlights the need for the ECG to intensify its efforts in addressing illegal connections and fake meters.

It also emphasizes the importance of residents to obtain approved ECG meters and to report any illegal connections to the appropriate authorities.

The ECG has pledged to conduct an investigation into the allegations made against one contractor and ensure that appropriate action is taken.
