Ahead of Ghana’s December 7, 2024, elections, presidential candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), and others signed the 4th Presidential Peace Pact in Accra.
Organized by the National Peace Council (NPC) and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), the event saw leaders pledge to ensure peace before, during, and after the elections. High-ranking figures like the Chief Justice, the National Chief Imam, and the Inspector-General of Police witnessed the ceremony, emphasizing its significance.
Inspector-General Dr. George Akuffo Dampare assured Ghanaians of improved security measures for a peaceful electoral process.
Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi of the NPC urged candidates to accept election results gracefully, reminding them that democracy offers future opportunities. Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensah committed to transparency and fairness, promising to uphold the public’s trust.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo pledged swift resolution of any electoral disputes to maintain stability.
Complementing these efforts, civil society organizations launched peace campaigns, urging political leaders, traditional authorities, and the media to promote unity and responsible reporting.
