Yesterday, former Black Stars player and Chelsea legend Michael Essien made headlines amid rumors of financial trouble and the auctioning of his two houses, valued at $50 million.
The properties, located in the prime areas of Accra—Stephen Quarshie Crescent in East Legon and Trassaco—include a mansion valued at nearly $30 million, underscoring their substantial worth.
While the details behind the auction remain unclear, sparking speculation about possible legal or financial issues, Essien’s financial status has come under public scrutiny.
On Angel FM, Saddick Adams, also known as Sports Obama, clarified the situation. According to Adams, the two properties are now under the care of Essien’s wife, Akosua Kuni, not Essien himself.

Adams explained that Essien had entered a mortgage agreement with estate developers but later found the high monthly payments unreasonable. Consequently, he chose to default, leading to the auction of the properties to recover the developers’ investment.
Despite these developments, Adams emphasized that Essien is far from bankrupt, noting that the former footballer still owns expensive properties in London, Spain, and Ghana.
