Black Stars captain Andre “Dede” Ayew has revealed that he waited patiently for his turn to lead the team, serving as deputy to Asamoah Gyan for six years before assuming the captaincy.
Ayew, who was speaking at a guest lecture at the University of Ghana, acknowledged that the captaincy is always a subject of debate in Ghana, but emphasized the importance of preparation and understanding the country’s mentality.
Ayew stated that he was well-prepared for the media scrutiny that came with the captaincy, having learned from Asamoah Gyan and senior players.
He advised future leaders to be prepared for the scrutiny, saying, “Anybody who is going to be the leader should be ready for that because you can’t take it away.”
Ayew’s appointment as captain in 2019 ended a reported longstanding battle with Asamoah Gyan over the captaincy.

However, Ayew emphasized that he focused on learning from Gyan and preparing himself for the role, saying, “I was already Asamoah’s assistant for about six years…so you just need to prepare yourself and learn from Asamoah.”
The Black Stars captain encouraged leaders to brush off criticism and focus on their responsibilities, saying, “You let it brush off like nothing and you move on.” Ayew’s comments offer insight into his leadership philosophy and his experiences as captain of the Black Stars.
