Ghanaian opposition Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo has rendered an unqualified apology to Harry Maguire for liking his performance to that of the government’s mismanagement of the economy.
Ghana has been struggling with inflation at over 35% and mounting debt.
Isaac Adongo had last year criticised Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for Ghana’s poor economic performance, and likened him to what he said was Maguire’s poor performance as a player for scoring own goals.
But on Tuesday, the MP said the Manchester United defender had since turned around his fortunes.
“Mr Speaker, I now apologise to Harry Maguire. Today, Harry Maguire has turned the corner and he is a transformational footballer,” he said in parliament during a budget debate.
He criticised Mr Bawumia’s performance as vice-president and head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team, which he said had driven the country more into debt and risked its economic performance.
The Ghanaian government hopes that like the Manchester United footballer, the economy will also bounce back thanks to an IMF bail out and negotiations to restructure its debt.
In an update, Harry Maguire took to the post on Joy Sports to reply Adongo.
“MP Isaac Adongo apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon.”
