She is a member of the Democratic Party and the current Attorney General of New York, having won the 2018 election to succeed appointed AG Barbara Underwood.</p>

She is the first woman of color to hold this position in New York State&#8217;s history. As Attorney General, she has been involved in various legal matters, including investigations into financial misconduct and environmental issues.</p>



<p>Prior to serving as Attorney General, James was the Public Advocate of New York City, a position she held from 2014 to 2018. In this role, she served as a watchdog over city agencies and an advocate for New Yorkers.</p>
