In a landmark judgement, the Lagos Sexual Offences & Domestic Violence Court has sentenced Kehinde Gabriel to life imprisonment for raping a 3-year-old girl.
The court found him guilty of defilement after the prosecution established the essential ingredients of the offence.
The defendant, in case ID/8392C/2018, was described by Justice Ramon A. Oshodi as a person of no truth who showed no remorse for what he did.
The judge went on to state that the act, which violated Section 137 of the Criminal Law 2015, was unjustifiable and handed Gabriel the maximum punishment.
His name will be registered in the Sexual Offenders Register maintained by the Lagos State Government.
The Domestic & Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) issued a statement on Tuesday, April 18, applauding the judgement and reiterating the state’s zero tolerance for such offences.
The agency also reminded citizens that there is help for survivors and urged them to break the culture of silence and report any case of domestic or sexual violence via its toll-free line.
The judgement is a significant victory for advocates fighting against sexual violence and abuse of minors.
It sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated and perpetrators will face the full extent of the law.
The hope is that this will serve as a deterrent to others who may consider committing similar heinous acts.
