A Nigerian man known simply as Joseph is currently devastated after discovering that two out of his three children were fathered by his elder brother.
Joseph shared his shocking discovery with a blogger, who then posted the story on Facebook. He explained that he has been in the United Kingdom on a visiting visa for five years, leaving his wife and three children in Nigeria under the care of his elder brother. During his stay in the UK, he frequently sent money back home for the construction of a house and to support his family.
Recently, Joseph traveled back to Nigeria to arrange visas for his family to join him in the UK. As part of the process, he needed to provide proof of paternity through DNA tests. To his surprise, the test results revealed that he is the biological father of only his first child.
In his own words, Joseph wrote:
“My name is Joseph. I have been in the UK for over five years now. I left my wife in Nigeria because I traveled to the UK on a visiting visa. I can work here, but I can’t return to Nigeria without getting my papers sorted.
I have been working hard, sending money to my elder brother to help build a house and take care of my wife and our parents. Before I left Nigeria, my wife and I had three children.
Now that my documents are ready, I traveled back to Nigeria to bring my family to the UK. When I got home, my brother took me to see the house—a beautiful building. But I was shocked to find that all the documents were in my brother’s name.
After beginning the visa process for my wife and children, the embassy requested DNA tests. The results showed that only my firstborn is mine; the other two children are my brother’s.
I was shocked, shattered, and confused. Our mother was equally stunned. My wife has begged for forgiveness, but I see both her and my brother as enemies. My family is urging me to continue with the visa process for all three children and to stay married to my wife, but I am at a loss. What can I do?”
Joseph’s story has sparked widespread sympathy and debate on social media as people weigh in on his dilemma.
