The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared a majority status in Ghana’s Parliament, following a recent ruling by Speaker Alban Bagbin declaring four seats vacant.
The decision was made under Article 97 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which mandates MPs to forfeit their seats if they leave their party or become independents.
With the seats vacated, the NDC now holds 136 seats, one more than the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 135, shifting the balance of power. The NDC MPs have since taken over the majority side in Parliament, asserting their newfound position despite an NPP challenge in the Supreme Court questioning the Speaker’s ruling.
