Following President John Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2025, a group of NDC supporters stormed the construction site of Ghana’s National Cathedral in Accra.
The protestors were heard accusing former President Nana Akufo-Addo of mismanaging millions of dollars meant for the $400 million state-funded project. Dubbed by critics as a “national hole,” the site remains incomplete despite its initial promise as a landmark for Ghana’s 60th independence anniversary.
The project, which began in 2018, was envisioned as an interdenominational Christian cathedral, featuring a 9-acre landscaped garden adjacent to Osu Cemetery.
However, years of delays and economic challenges, including Ghana’s ongoing pursuit of an IMF bailout, have made the cathedral a symbol of controversy.
Protestors highlighted the nation’s dire economic needs, contrasting them with the stalled construction and its associated financial burden.
Social media is abuzz with videos and commentary, with many Ghanaians questioning the project’s relevance amid the country’s economic crisis.
Calls are growing for an audit of the funds allocated to the cathedral, as concerns about transparency and accountability deepen.
